by Robert D. Ballard

The sinking of the Titanic made headlines when she sank on April 15, 1912. On September 1, 1985, the Titanic was once again in the headlines when a French-American expedition led by Dr. Robert Ballard had discovered the legendary lost ship. The Titanic had been found sitting proudly upright on the ocean bottom 2 /1/2 miles beneath the surface. Robert Ballard and his team returned to the Titanic in 1986. In a tiny three-man submarine they dove down to the icy black depths where the ship lay. With Jason, Jr. (J.J.), their tiny swimming robot, they explored and photographed the entire ship in detail, even down the Grand Staircase to get a closer look at the chandeliers still hanging from the ceiling.

Dr, Ballard is well known to young people through his yearly Jason Project expeditions which broadcast live to schools and science museums and through his appearances on Steven Spielberg’s Sea Quest television program. His has written other books and articles for young readers and appeared in television documentaries for the National Geographic Society. He is also president of the Sea Research Foundation’s Institute for Exploration in Mystic, CT.

Here is the powerful, real-life adventure story of the greatest ship ever lost and how she was found.
