Aft Steering

The Titanic shows a steering wheel on the poop deck. How in the world could you use it? You can't see around the ship to know where you are going, I see no evidence of a telephone or telegraph back there. Do you mean to tell me that they would have steered an 800 foot ocean liner by a compass and a wheel with no eyes forward?

I am incredulous, As I look at models and images of Titanic, I wonder how they managed to keep people off of that poop deck bridge and monkeying around with that steering wheel. That was third class I think.
